Here is a Healthy Living Tip: There is something that I really don't understand about life here in America. Why doesn't more people care about their health when there are so many easy ways to lose weight? The quality of our health should be our number one concern. If we don't take care of ourselves, then who will?

A friend of mine just turned 60 and he was talking about how old he was getting and how he could no longer do the things he used to. I just could not wrap my head around his comment. What you have to understand is that he is around 400 pounds and he's only 5'8".

I have following healthy living tips for over 35 years. I'm all but a vegetarian (I do eat seafood on rare occasion), and I eat healthier than anyone I know. And at 59, I still love mountain biking.

When I was in my early 40's and a hardcore mountain biker, I had one of those life changing moments happen to me. I had just climbed a 2 ½ mile climb and about 2 minutes behind me came this old guy. He wasn't even winded! He had no teeth and a French accent. I finally had to ask him how old he was. He told me he was 63.

Right at that moment I knew that at age 63 I could be enjoying this sport and still kicking butt on 90% of the riders.

What's important to me is the quality of my health when I am 63. I don't want to be 63 and suffering from obesity, or arthritis, or emphysema, high blood pressure, or whatever. My buddy is settling for a great deal less than what he has to. He's either ignorant, lazy, or, I'm sorry, just too brainless to do anything about it.

Sure, I have talked to him about the easy ways to lose weight, Sure, I have tried to help him understand all of the easy ways to lose weight, but he just dosn't want to change

I would rather be healthy, active and enjoying my life, than be a fat couch potato, unhealthy, getting winded just walking to the frig, and being less than what I could be.

Do not get me wrong, I love my buddy of 34 years, and I love ice cream and chocolate, homemade chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, oh, and pizza too, but I realize the difference of eating these foods as treats, and not as my daily staples.

Are diet soda really as healthy as it is claimed to be?

Many people, when they start a new diet, decide to switch from regular soda to the diet variety to reduce the calories they consume. But are diet colas really a healthy alternative? True, by switching you will reduce the calorie consumption considerably, because while regular sodas contain over 100 calories per can, diet soda has none.

Eat just two slices of pizza (and who does?), and you will have taken on board about 28g of fat and a massive 340 calories. Add on the various extra toppings that are so popular, and the figures just keep on rising.

Subway

You may think that you are eating healthily, but be careful about what you choose. A 6" Chicken Parmesan sandwich is around 18g of fat and about 500 calories. Add on the numbers for any side orders and relish or sauce on your sandwich, and the total amounts of fat and calories can be high. Steer clear of fast food outlets if you can, but if you need the convenience they offer, check out their menu in advance, to find what is available, so that you won't exceed your diet plan.

"I just can't get rid of my love handles! What can I do?" That is exactly what I said six months ago. Since, then I have tried just about anything - numerous diet programs and workout regimens and have had minimal success on my big problem areas - which happened to be my love handles. I changed the way I shopped. I didn't buy any packaged goods. I didn't bring home any twelve packs or stocked up on wine or chips. I decreased my portion sizes by half. And I stopped using greasy sprays or cooking oil to prepare my meals. If I had to fry it - it was gone. If I had to put high calorie sauces on it, it was gone. Every night after dinner, I went for a walk. Not only did I find this helpful to my digestion, but it lowered my cholesterol.

Of course, I decided to stay with my workout regimen - going to the gym twice a week and swimming once a week.

Soon, I found my love handles slipping away. The good thing about it, was that I began to feel good about myself because I was not letting the scale dictate my happiness. You could eat two servings (48 chips, 6 TBLS) and only consume 340 calories! It would "feel" like you're cheating, but you're not!

4) How about cup of nuts? They not only take awhile to chew, but they're a great protein blast. And although they are high in calories, they are a snack that burns up fast; so the calories don't land on you.

5) Pretzels...my all time favorite low-calorie, salty snack. They clock-in at only 110 calories for 28 sticks, and you can make them last longer by breaking the sticks in half (then you get 56 sticks)!

6) Two pieces of thin deli cheese (whatever you like) wrapped around some deli smoked chicken. Serve with mustard. Again, since chicken is protein it burns fast, and because you got your cheese sliced thin it should only be about 60 calories each. If you take two pieces of cheese, and wrap 2 slices of the chicken in each piece of cheese, you'll only get about 200 calories. (I eat this for breakfast about 4 days per week.)

7) One apple cut up into small little pieces. Eat with fork. (This is my little trick for making things last longer. May daughter says I'm persnickety...she may be right!)

8) Flavored rice cakes...eat them till you drop and you still won't get many calories! You'll get lots of flavor though.

9) Plain yogurt with frozen cherries or blueberries mixed in. First dish out the yogurt from the container into a small bowl. Then cut your cherries (or toss your blueberries) in and mix. The calorie count should be around 150. By the way, the reason I say to put the yogurt in a small bowl versus keeping it in its original container is because it will actually seem like more to your senses. And that's a good thing.

10) Cut up a tomato and cucumber (deseed for optimum flavor) in small bite-size pieces and spray some salad spritz on it.

So now that you have ten tasty, low-calorie snacks; here's to your success as you start to substitute these items with high-calorie snacks that are currently in your diet. Good luck!
