Achieving flat and firm abs is as much about diet as it is about exercise. This 50-50 relationship is well documented by both scientists and fitness professionals, and believe it or not you do not have to exercise in order to burn excess belly fat. There are particular foods which help to consistently burn fat in the body and subsequently assist the appearance of a flat abdominal area. Here are five fat burning foods.

1. Green Tea

Green tea is not just great for detoxing the body and maintaining a healthy immune system, it also speeds up the metabolism helping to burn off excess calories when you are not exercising. Green tea does contain caffeine, albeit only 50% of that in a normal cup of tea, but those sensitive to caffeine might want to stop drinking green tea 2-hours before sleeping.

2. Eggs

It is a misconception that eggs pile on the pounds. Obviously if you over-indulge this may ring true. But swapping your morning bread and bagels for 1-2 eggs in the morning will in fact help you lose weight. Eggs contain vitamin B12 which the body uses to metabolize fat. If you are worried about your cholesterol then take out the yellows and stick with the whites.

3. Chicken and Turkey

Lean meats will help your quest for flatter abs because the body burns more calories digesting protein than carbohydrate heavy foods. Skinless chicken breast and turkey are meats with a high protein concentration and low level of fat.

4. Almonds

Almonds will keep your stomach full for longer - thus staving off hunger pains and cravings for sweets and cakes. Although almonds are high in fat, this is what we call 'good fat' as opposed to animal fat which is bad. Almonds are high in protein and fibre which both help the body to burn fat. Warning: Almonds are high in calories so don't consume too many, just a handful to get past sugar cravings between meals.

5. Protein Powder

Usually associated with those wanting to achieve bigger muscles, protein powder is often overlooked by those wanting to shed belly fat. We are not talking mass gainers here; we are talking low calorie, quality protein powder with a high amino acid concentration. Amino acids burn fat and sustain and build muscle, therefore helping you maintain your exercise progress and burn extra fat while you work or play.
