Most of us would love to lose weight or at the very least get our weight under control, this is why understanding carbohydrates is central to any weight loss program. I hear you, what are carbohydrates, how do I recognise them and why do I need to eat less of them? It's a simple fact that if we are hungry the thing we tend to eat most of is carbohydrate (sandwiches - bread, cakes, biscuits etc.) and this is one of the worst things to do as far as your weight is concerned.
Let me explain;
All foods contain carbohydrates - some more than others. All carbohydrates turn into glucose. Glucose is basically sugar. When you eat carbohydrate it is converted to glucose that the insulin from your pancreas removes from your blood stream and puts into the cells of your body to be used as energy. Energy is measured in calories.
If your level of physical activity is not enough to use the calories you are getting from your food the excess is consequently stored as FAT.
Too much glucose plus insufficient exercise = fat which your body has to store. Keep that up and over the years your weight will increase. This explains why as we get older and more affluent we tend to eat out more, eat 'better' and generally get less exercise with the result we 'put on weight'. You don't have to be a genius to understand that what we are now talking about is achieving BALANCE.
Correct glucose levels from eating the correct mixture and amount of food plus some reasonable simple exercise = BALANCE = no weight gain Less glucose plus some reasonable simple exercise = Weight loss. So here we are; Change our eating habits to take in less carbohydrate and take a regular 20 minute walk daily and you will reduce weight. When you have got to your desired weight you can adjust to get balance.
If you can understand the basic principles you will be able to lose weight and eventually take control of your weight, you will get balance.
